GMA presents Traveling TrunksTraveling Trunks
Portable Museum Lessons Ready for Your Classroom!

The traveling trunks program is an opportunity to put real museum artifacts (and some replicas) into your students hands! While this program is still being developed, we are excited to have three trunks available for check-out at this time. The lessons included in each trunk are appropriate for K- 8. Trunks are available free of charge and can be rented for a week (extensions are available if the trunks are not reserved the following week).

Etowah County Traveling Trunk'Etowah County Traveling Trunk
A New Look at Local History

The Etowah County Traveling Trunk gives educators the opportunity to present local history to their students. Lessons in this trunk include "Etowah County Geography" and "Etowah County History," as well as lessons on "Archaeology and Artifacts" and "Using Pictures to Understand the Past." Each lesson includes supplemental activities. Example activities include a 3-D map of Etowah County and the opportunity for students to become archaeologists and explore artifacts from the case. This trunk includes four books, lesson plans and corresponding powerpoints, classroom posters, twenty matted-photographs, and nine artifacts.

A Look at Ancient Egypt
The Ancient Egypt Traveling Trunk is the perfect preparation for a visit to the museum's current exhibit, Tut @ GMA. These lessons have been previously made available, but now they come complete with replica artifacts, maps, books, activities, and classroom visual aids. This trunk includes 5 lessons on "Ancient Egypt & Geography," "Royalty and Symbolism," "Pyramids," "Hieroglyphs," and "Everyday Life of Ancient Egyptians." Each lesson includes supplemental activities and comes with a pre-prepared powerpoint. Activities included in this case are Egyptian mathworksheets, map-reading activites, and a case of fun classroom activities that includes: Egyptian Power Stamps and Secrets of the Pyramids Game.This case comes with lesson plans and powerpoints, classroom posters, maps, two books, and 7 artifacts.

 

Mexico Traveling TrunkMexico Traveling Trunk
A Look at Mexico
The Mexico Traveling Trunk will give students the opportunity to explore the United States southern-neighbor and to understand our population's growing Hispanic Culture. Lessons in this case feature "An Introduction to Mexico and Geography," "The History of Mexico," "Day of the Dead," and "Cinco de Mayo." Supplemental activities include papel picado and maraca activities and calacas coloring sheets. Included in this case are lesson plans and powerpoints, three books, classroom visual aids, Alabama AL Dia: A Report on Hispanic Cultures in Alabama, maps, and ten artifacts (which includes four musical instruments). This case is a great opportunity to expose your students to two of the major Mexican celebrations.
